An Experimental Study of Haptic Positional Synchronization in TCP/IP Networks

چکیده
Traditional Internet is based on the best effort approach, which allow connections for peer-to-peer communications with different characteristics, such as VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), VoD (Video on Demand) and data transmission services. In contrast, the increasing demands for variety multimedia applications for future Internet. Therefore, all multimedia services should have Quality of Service (QoS) to support real-time data transmissions in the future Internet multimedia services. This paper presents an experimental investigation into the real-time tele-haptic operation via TCP/IP networks. The experimental results show many challenges in conducting haptic traffic over TCP/IP networks. The UDP jitter, delay and packet loss, these factors will seriously affect user experience under haptic interaction. It is because, jitter, delay and pack loss may lose the positional synchronization between master and slave haptic devices, which will cause haptic communication instability. Thus this paper describe the haptic interaction in order to compare the real-time X-position discrepancies between master and slave haptic devices as the mean opinion score (MOS) over TCP/IP networks. The congestion problem is frequently encountered in communication networks. Network routers transmit packets by links having a limited bandwidth and, if the number of incoming packets exceeds a link capacity, the link is congested and router buffers storing packets to be transmitted via this link may overflow. To address this problem in TCP/IP networks, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF...
متن کاملEvaluating Multipath TCP Resilience against Link Failures
Standard TCP is the de facto reliable transfer protocol for the Internet. It is designed to establish a reliable connection using only a single network interface. However, standard TCP with single interfacing performs poorly due to intermittent node connectivity. This requires the re-establishment of connections as the IP addresses change. Multi-path TCP (MPTCP) has emerged to utilize multiple ...
متن کاملProviding QoS for Networked Peers in Distributed Haptic Virtual Environments
Haptic information originates from a different human sense (touch), therefore the quality of service (QoS) required to support haptic traffic is significantly different from that used to support conventional real-time traffic such as voice or video. Each type of network impairment has different (and severe) impacts on the user’s haptic experience. There has been no specific provision of QoS par...

In this paper we present tehniques to to improve the performance TCP/IP over satellite-ATM networks, and to provide minimum rate guarantees to VCs carrying TCP/IP traac. Many future systems are proposing to use ATM or ATM like technology to transport TCP/IP based data. These systems must be designed to support best eeort services, as well as enhanced services that provide minimum rate guarantee...
متن کاملAn Evaluation of TCP with
We study the effect of Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) on TCP for relatively large but finite file transfers in IP networks, and compare it to other congestion avoidance mechanisms, namely Drop Tail (DT) and Random Early Detection (RED). We use simulation to measure TCP performance for transfers initiated by a varying number of end hosts. In contrast to previous work, we focus on situati...
